Have you ever heard of a town named Corryong?

Corryong is a small town of about 1500 people in North East Victoria. It is located 120 kilometers east of Albury-Wodonga, near the upper reaches of the Murray River and thus is close to the New South Wales border.

For most parts of the year, it is a pretty laid back town with mainly just the locals or the tourists popping through on their way north to Kosciuszko via Khancoban, or to look at many of the local attractions. Even so the small country town, has some interesting history that goes along with it and once year, in April the town comes to life with the annual The Man from Snowy River Bush Festival.

The interesting history I was talking about before is that it is famous as the final resting place of Jack Riley, considered by many to be the inspiration for the hero in Banjo Paterson’s poem The Man from Snowy River. Visitors can go see Jack Riley’s grave at the Corryong Cemetery or learn more about the legend at The Man from Snowy River Folk Museum, which has heaps of incredible old stuff that surely isn’t around anymore, definitely worth the stop!

For some unforgettable high country action, come on down to Corryong in April when The Man from Snowy River Bush Festival is held. Watch a field of 80 riders perform incredible feats in the legendary The Man from Snowy River Challenge or wander through the open-air market listening to storytellers, bands and folk singers and also check out the Art and Photography exhibition which has many local talents showing their work each year. This year’s festival is being held on the 9th-12th and there is plenty to come see and do during the festival. It is certainly worth the trip itself!

Apart from the festival there are many other things to see and do. Visitors can make the short trip to the historic town of Tintaldra and visit the 150 year old pub or the Tintaldra Store built in 1864, and if your a horsey fan stop by the oldest racecourse grandstand in the state, as featured in the film Phar Lap, at the Towong Turf Club.

And for the more adventurous people you can tackle the wild rapids of the Murray River or visit the nearby Burrowa-Pine Mountain National Park and do a spot of hiking to many of the beautiful lookouts or waterfalls such as the Cudgewa Bluff Falls, perfect spot to cool down especially on a hot summers day.

Corryong is a fabulous town to visit no matter what time of year, and I would highly recommend dropping into Tallulah’s Cafe near the roundabout on the main street. They have some killer fish & chips!

So next weekend if your wondering on where you should take a Sunday drive to, head on over to Corryong. Trust me, you won’t regret it!

Until next week,

Jess 🙂 x
